Hi Mirax, thanks for the thoughts. Here are my responses:
- Electoral fairness — yes, the elections hardly seemed fair: both for PM and President. My point is that in both cases, left to free choice, or through state intervention — a brown person would have won.
- Malays in the military — This has been answered numerous times. The fact that this continues to be asked as if it hasn’t been answered is why I am suspicious of the motives of people who refuse to look. But say you really are ignorant (which given the platform we’re using, I highly doubt) — the short answer is that for most of our military history, we were poised against an adversarial state that courted the superiority of Malay interests. That has waned over the years, and Malays have since climbed the ranks across all branches: https://www.quora.com/Why-are-there-no-Muslims-in-some-sectors-of-the-Singapore-Army-and-Navy
- Ethnic housing quotas “place unfair burdens on ethnic minorities”? Please explain.
- Equality commission — we do, not one, but many. They are specific to labour relations, among other things. The closest thing we have to a centralized institution with which to combat discrimination is the judicial system. Feel discriminated against? There are specific channels of redress: https://www.straitstimes.com/forum/letters-in-print/legal-punitive-measures-in-place-to-tackle-workplace-discrimination
- “ There have been numerous cases of brown-facing by Chinese in recent years. … You may not be aware of these incidents” — You may not have read my article. I mentioned this multiple times. I’m willing to take a wager of $5,000 on this.
- “Preeti Nair may not have been the most diplomatic but it is calling out racism and has the caveat that it is aimed at racist Chinese.” — I am now even more convinced than ever that you haven’t read my article before commenting: https://medium.com/@ivanhong_25005/in-defence-of-preetipls-what-she-didnt-do-and-what-she-did-fd45e7b68ac8
- I’ve quoted the exact verse that says “it’s actually accurate of the city we in, no matter who we choose, the Chinese man win” — so don’t tell me that there is “no mention of the voting process being rigged in the video”. I am not here to be “charitable” in my interpretation of untruths. When MPs, refer to Malays as “ticking time bombs”, should I be charitable in interpreting that metaphor? Perhaps she meant that Malays are late-bloomers? Or perhaps a reference to the urgency of their need for help?
